Even Slots Hit Multiple Jackpots

Several weeks ago I started an avalanche when I wrote of my experience of hitting two $1,200 video poker jackpots within five hands. This led to a flood of e-mail and phone calls from video poker players, each with their own tales of riches.

Two weeks ago I shared some of these stories and mentioned that I hadn't heard from any slot players about their wins. Within days, dozens of slot players contacted me and told me of their own jackpots wins, including a few on back-to-back spins of the reels. I appreciate the feedback and regret that there's not enough space for all the great stories here.

Let's look at a few, starting with this e-mail from Bob: Two years ago, I was playing the $1 Wheel of Fortune at Hollywood in Aurora. I was playing on a Red, White and Blue machine when I hit the Red, White and Blue 7's for $1,600! While I was waiting for the payout, I put $20 in the machine and two spins later I hit the Red, White and Blue 7s again for another $1,600! I also had a day to remember exactly one month later. It was also at Hollywood and I was playing a $1 Double Double Bonus Poker machine. I hit four Aces with a kicker for $2,000. Two hands later I hit a Royal flush for $4,000. I just couldn't believe my luck. I left the casino before noon. Later that day I came back with a friend and of course I went back to the same machine. Through various wins, but this time without a royal flush, I left with an additional $8,000! The same machine I had won on that same morning. Unbelievable!

Jane sent an email about her wins in Hollywood as well: As far as back-to-back jackpots are concerned, my boyfriend won two jackpots within three spins on the Triple Diamond two-coin low-boy $1 machine at the Hollywood Casino. While we were being paid out we asked the attendant if this happened often, and he said it was very rare.

An e-mail also brought this note from Peter, a retired Sunday Times reporter who is frequently in touch. I've run into Peter several times at Harrah's in Joliet, but his story happened in Las Vegas: I've never had two jackpots in a row, but I saw it happen in Las Vegas. I stopped at one of my two favorite video poker venues, the downtown El Cortez. While I was taking a break I went to the slot carousel at the back of the poker machines. I was waiting for a hand-payout on the Red, White and Blue slot and I heard a lady yell out behind me that she had hit the top jackpot on a Double Diamond. When they paid off they asked her to play the winner off and she hit it again. I had never seen that before and I haven't seen it happen since! A great payday on back-to-back Double Diamonds!

Another back-to-back winner was Jean from North Riverside. Her husband Jason phoned in to tell us the story: About two months ago we were at the Horseshoe in Hammond and my wife was playing the Five Times Pay machine. She hit a 5 with a white 7 and another 5, giving her $931. The attendants paid her off and on her next spin she got a 5, 5 and a red 7. That brought $1,100. Two thousand dollars in less than five minutes, on back-to-back spins!

The best story of all was still to come. Kathleen from Kenbridge wrote in to tell us of a big day she had on a progressive machine: My two sisters and I go to Las Vegas regularly every year. We see a couple of shows, enjoy a great dinner and then it’s on to play the slots. My sisters went off to play the Wheel of Fortune, but I settled down into a one dollar Wild Cherry progressive. I was doing okay and enjoying myself. After half an hour, I'd won a little, lost a little and was down about $50 when it suddenly happened. Three Wild Cherries. I couldn't believe it! The most I'd ever won at once was $1,000, but this was a progressive jackpot worth $12,841. It took a while for me to get paid. They took my ID and wrote down my Social Security number. Then they asked if I wanted cash, a check or a combination. I took $3,000 in cash and the rest in a check.

After about 20 minutes, they reset the jackpot at $5,000 and asked me to play the winning combination off the reels. Guess what? Three more Wild Cherries!
I just about fainted and what’s more, I still feel faint just thinking about that day!

Casino players are like fishermen – they love sharing the tales of their big wins. There are enough bad luck stories going around!
